New Season, New Project
So, with the Winter Solstice arriving, leaving us with shorter days, and longer nights. I’ve decided to kick it into gear and to keep myself warm, as people from Melbourne would know how crazy the weather can be here and how fast it can change. While the other side of the world enjoys the warm summer. We are left in the depths of an upcomming cold winter.
Yes, yes…Winter is coming.
This brings me to my project I’ve chose to take on and where else to begin this new adventure than sharing it on my brand new shiny blog.
There is currently a competition to “design your own snowboard”, I’ve been passionate about the sport and have had a real crack at taking on the slopes over the last couple of years. Unfortunatly, last year I traded the snowboard for some summer sun on the other side of the world. So, this year I’m planning to not only go snowboarding again by hitting the local slopes in country Victoria but create something that reflects my passion.
Now, I’ve already seen some of the designs that have been entered into the competition on the companies facebook page. They look fantastic and with already so many great entries in the mix, this has really inspired me (as, so far I haven’t yet seen anything remotely akin to my illustration style or ideas).
Having said this, I have been thinking a lot over the last few days, talking to friends at work mostly about our shared interests. Which are sad to say; movies, Sci-fi, Xbox and of course snowboarding, enter the GEEK! Hence, with all this thought while gaming, idol coffee chat and some sleep thrown in there I have a starting point:I will design an awesome piece to slap on a snowboard and if anyone knows anything of my work a medium that my design work has not yet reached.
Now, let’s brainstorm;
As you can see, from my sketchs below this is how I always like to start my design process with pencil and paper (call me old fashioned). I know a lot of designers now jump straight onto Google search, or onto their drawing tablets or photoshop, throwing things together hoping they will work. I’ve tried that and unfortunatly, that doesn’t work for me I’m a child of the old era, eh what can you do?
I want to take more of a sci-fi approach to my first design. Something that makes you think things like “WOW” and “where is that?” and finally “I want to know more about these characters”. I’ve heard the term recently, that describes artwork like this called “postcards”. Which highlights a place somewhere you would rather be and want to know all about it by looking at a photograph or artwork. This is something I want to achieve.
Lets see how I go…
